World LEMUR FESTIVAL2025

In 2017, Hurricane Harvey devastated the southern coastal bend.  Among the people, cats and dogs who were displaced during this time, was a small population of lemurs and a local doctor who lost their home. Like many, it's taken years to recover and rebuild from this historical event.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU SEE ONE?

1. consider yourself lucky! There are less than 5000 left in the world.

2. stay calm, they are more afraid of you. like cats they don't like to be approached. They get to know you not the other way around. but this is not that "meet and greet" moment. 

3. call our volunteer rescue team who is familiar with handling lemurs and may be able to identify the owner.

4. for the lemurs' protection secure your pets.

 

FOR THOSE THAT ARE BRAVE, some are more domesticated than others and may try to "say hi" This might lead to a surprise leap and land on your shoulder. While it may startle you please know they are not attacking, simply toss the food, or brush them off you. they do have very sharp teeth and nails so to be safe don't try to hold or pet them, let them do their thing and we will be on our way. 

 Remember these are endangered species and it is illegal to capture, harm, harass or kill one. They thrive in communities of their own kind and are not intended to be a one and only pet, with limited exceptions.

6. no need to capture or contain them. once we know the vicinity of the lemur sighting, we know how to call them back and how to handle it from there.
